How Important is it to Groom Your Pet?

Regular grooming of your pet can prevent health issues, keep your pet’s skin healthy, and even help them bond with you. Be sure to adhere to the following grooming standards to keep your pet healthy and content:

Dogs

Baths

Dogs need baths, but typically only once every few months. So, unless Spot is getting into the garbage can on a regular basis, you don’t need to bathe him every week. In fact, doing so can strip his skin of natural oils he needs to stay healthy.

Brushing

Brushing often is a great idea! Long-haired breeds could do with brushing each day if you have time for it. Shorter haired dogs don’t need brushing as frequently, but regular brushing can help significantly cut back on loose fur around your home. Be cautious; if you find tangled fur, be very gentle and do not try to pull it out! Contact a vet or groomer for further advice.

Cats

Baths

Baths can usually be avoided for cats altogether unless they have a tendency to get oily or sticky. When this is the case, be sure to brush him thoroughly beforehand. Then, use lukewarm water with mild cat shampoo.

Brushing

Brush your cat as regularly as possible! This can help prevent your cat from accidentally consuming too much fur and coughing it up later as a hairball. Keep your fur brushing sessions in between 10 and 15 minutes; otherwise, you risk upsetting your cat.
